Yakima County NAACP Issues Statement: Stop the Hate

The supremely tragic murders of the women yesterday in Atlanta deeply grieves our local NAACP community. While the investigation into this incident continues, authorities are investigating the motivation of why these women, particularly Asian women, were targeted. We abhor racism and ethnic-based violence in all of its forms and the Yakima County NAACP stands strongly in solidarity for the emotional support of our AAPI friends, neighbors, and families.

We encourage all to stop the hate! It is up to you to speak up and speak out when you see hatred being displayed in your surroundings, whether it is with racial slurs or in race-based animosity. It is up to you and me to keep confronting bigotry and racism, both individually and as a united people.

Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends, and neighbors of the women who were killed. Each one of those precious lives was taken away from us much too soon. We also want all members of the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander community here with us in Yakima County to know that we love you and will stand beside you in our fight for justice and equity for all.

May we each keep marching on in strength and determination to combat racism in order to ensure a society in which all individuals have freedom from race-based discrimination and violence. May the families of those murdered get the justice that they seek.

Reesha Cosby

Yakima County NAACP President
